Welcome Hellbender Enthusiasts! The 2005 Hellbender
Symposium will be held 19-22 June at Gaston’s White River Resort in Lakeview,
Arkansas. Gaston’s, a well-known
trout fishing resort, is nestled along the eastern bank of the scenic White
River, less than 3 km below Bull Shoals Dam.
Ben Wheeler, Waylon Hiler,
and I are your co-hosts. We are
excited to be organizing this conference and look forward to meeting with the
world’s leading experts on giant salamanders.
Please feel free to contact any of us regarding any aspect of the
meeting. In order to allow for
economical lodging, we have reserved the entire River Villa at Gaston’s
Resort. The River Villa contains
10 rooms, each with two beds and a private bath. This facility also contains a large common room and patio
that should allow for those late night discussions/rendezvous.
These rooms are priced for two occupants at $101 (+ tax) per room per
night. In addition, we have also
reserved an adjacent facility with 12 motel rooms.
Each room contains two beds and a private bath at a rate of $87 (+ tax)
per room per night. There are also many other accommodations with kitchen
facilities and other amenities at higher rates; these can be seen on Gaston’s
web page. *Accommodations are on a first
come--first serve basis, but graduate students (or those not concerned with
noise) will have first priority at the River Villa.
Reservations can be made at (870) 431-5202. *A deposit from the general symposium fund was required for us to reserve the above two facilities, so we encourage you to take advantage of these reservations. The registration fee has been set at $35, and we have hired Marty Capron to design a hellbender t-shirt (ca. $15) for the symposium. Any excess funds will be donated toward the 2007 Hellbender Symposium (location to be announced). We have provided links to Registration Form and Call for Papers. We have arranged for two catered meals. Monday evening we will have BBQ pork and beef, and Tuesday we plan to have a fried fish/chicken meal. The $20 on the registration form will cover the cost of both meals. We'll
see you in the Ozarks! Sincerely, Stan Trauth
