Synopsis:

Each year Dr. Trauth takes a group of students on a field trip that covers a large portion of the state of Arkansas (see the map of sites visited below).  Each year the students target a particular species or habitat type.  This year we took a northern route in order to visit a number of glades that have not been surveyed for over 10 years.

Often times, natural history observations are made that lead to new research projects.  We even occasionally make observations that are immediately publishable.  During the 2005 field trip we found a ground snake, Sonora semiannulata.  This was the first specimen of the species that has been found in the state in over 50 years, and a 5 county eastward range extension within Arkansas.  This record was submitted for publication to Herpetological Review (Milanovich et al. 2005), the Quarterly Newsletter for the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles.
